I haven't been anticipating a rock/alternative album this much for a long time. It was supposed to come out last summer, but has been pushed back time and again by the Eagles' rigourous touring schedule. As a sign of their growing popularity, they're now on tour with The Strokes, after doing an 11-show stint with the Foo Fighters. This album, EODM are back with more guest spots, notably Jack Black (see picture, from Death by Sexy's first video), Brody Dalle, Dave Grohl, Dave Catching, Mark Lannigan and the usual, Josh Homme, of Queens of the Stone Age (QOTSA) fame. Not bad for a band who recorded their debut album in a continuous 48-hour recording session.
On first listen, the album is pretty catchy, that is, if my Internet-bootlegged version is indeed the final studio cut. It's also vapid, poorly produced and unapologetically tacky; everything I've come to expect from the ramshackle Eagles. They've stuck to their garage-band identity which is good, as I worried they'd drift towards the over-produced seamlessness of recent QOTSA material. Best thing is, it still makes you wanna dance, a major theme of the Eagles' work. The lead single "I like to move in the night" is quintessential EODM, with a wretched chorus: "you know we move/yes we move/'cause we like our dancin'/ohh!" But the Jumpin' Jack Flash-feel to the guitars, twangy honky-tonk solos and flighty vocals are equal parts Harvest Moon Neil Young and De Stijl White Stripes.
